A few months ago, just out of the blue, I decided to go to Venice with my daughter. Not sure if we wanted to celebrate something, perhaps my 50 (belated) anniversary. I have never been too interested in going to Venice, truth to be told. I had in my mind an image of ultra touristic and worryingly romantic destination, maybe and impression given by the countless films that have used the city as a background (or as a main character, some could say).
I thought anyways that it could be a great trip for taking pictures. Also, I thought about how climate change might make the city disappear, if the sea level happen to increase, say in a century, say in a few years. Before that happens, I needed to see the place, and I knew I would process my pictures in black and white.
With all these in mind, we arrived to Venice Marco Polo airport and we took a boat to the city. We were in a Airbnb in an old house just right in a canal with views to a beautiful bridge, in Cannaregio.
We explored every bit of the city. It was crowded, as expected. Food was great. The uniqueness of the place is that actually, its a city designed without cars in mind. I know its not a surprise at all, but people, supplies for the shops, restaurants, rubbish collection, ambulances, even the bones of a dinosaur being transported to a museum, all goes through this ancient network of canals. And this made me see how different from other places this is. We were glad to have visited Venice.
